Legend has it that the very origin of the Japanese race depended on the outcome of a sumo match. When Take-Mikazuchi, who was known as a god, won a Sumo match between another tribe, he was known as the founder of the great sport.

Sumo Wrestling was, at one point, exclusively thought of as a Japanese sport. But now, due to various events and political standing that are going on in the great country of Japan, they had to open up their exclusive sport to the outside world, in attempts to gain back its power and popularity. Due to this decision, however, the Japanese are no longer number one in Sumo Wrestling. Likely due to the fact that Japan has smaller families that tend to have a better income. http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2015/03/economist-explains-13
